Nash tried to remember the last time he’d had fun. Maybe his last Taco Tuesday with Wren. Probably the whole series of Tuesdays. He didn’t know why. He worked, he worked out, he spent quality time with his brother and some less-quality time with his father. Dating wouldn’t have made his top five—or his top twenty. He disliked the expectations and it seemed like a waste of time when he knew that what he had to offer did not include a heart. The heartless state was a deal killer for everyone he’d met, and he didn’t blame them.

There was no point in opening up to someone, let alone a more or less random stranger he was drinking coffee with, eating dinner with or about to have sex with. He didn’t have a vulnerable side because he didn’t have sides. It couldn’t be helped. It was just how he was, and frankly, it made his life much easier. His dates had complained. Wren, however, wasn’t a date, not a real one at any rate, so his dating rules didn’t apply. And yet, as his friend, she pushed and poked, cajoled and smiled, and he suspected she wanted to look right inside him.

Whether or not she’d like what she found was immaterial.

Their Martha’s Vineyard trip had been surprisingly not bad. He’d enjoyed watching her take on the auction and its roomful of socialites, power players and do-gooders. Okay, so some of the people had been there just to support a good cause and to have fun. But he’d watched Wren throw herself into the evening wholeheartedly, enjoying the cheesiness of the auction while still...well, having his back. She’d been there for him. Hadn’t backed down or let go. She also wasn’t apologetic about who she was or just how much she loved girlie things and a romantic night out. And every time she admitted that she’d been let down or left alone or not even close to a movie-perfect night out with a guy, he wanted to fix that for her. Hire an entire production company to give her the full Fred Astaire treatment with tap dancing, roses and a devoted man in black tie. If that was romantic. Hell if he knew.

And even though Wren could handle life just fine on her own, she was unabashedly looking for someone to share it with. And despite one dating disappointment after another, she kept on trying. It should have come as no surprise that she’d refused to let him shut her out once she’d decided that they would be friends. She was simply, inexorably, perfectly part of his life. Even his lab loved her. He couldn’t miss how they included her in their conversations, smiled when she popped in to drag him out for their ridiculous Taco Tuesday lunches. Which he loved. Not that he’d told her that. He needed to work on that.

If she could be open to new experiences after getting knocked down more times than a punching bag, he could, too.
